What You’ll Need- Replacement blades: (Refer to the previous chart for your specific year).
- A small towel or rag: Place this on the windshield to protect the glass in case the metal wiper arm snaps back down while the blade is off.
Steps
Prep the Area: Pull the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in a vertical, standing position. Lay your towel down on the glass directly under where the arm would
Locate the Release Tab: On the underside of the wiper blade where it meets the metal arm, there is a small plastic tab or lever.
Release the Blade: Press and hold that tab. While holding it, slide the wiper blade down toward the base of the arm (away from the hook).
Remove: Once the blade slides out of the hook, tilt it slightly and pull it away from the metal arm.
Install the New Blade: Slide the new blade into the hook of the metal arm. Pull it upward toward the end of the hook until you hear or feel a "click," which signals it is locked into place.
Test: Gently lower the arm back onto the windshield. Turn on your wipers with some fluid to ensure they swipe smoothly and don't chatter.
Exceptions to Watch For
- Early Models (1984–1987): Some very early Civics might have blades held on by two small screws rather than a hook. If you see screws on the side of the arm, you will need a small Phillips-head screwdriver to swap them.
- The Rear Blade: If you have a hatchback, the rear wiper often has a "pivot" style. You usually just rotate the blade outward until it snaps out of its plastic housing.

Steps
Enter Maintenance Mode
Turn the ignition ON, then OFF.
Within 10 seconds, hold the wiper switch in the MIST position for more than 2 seconds.
The wiper arms will move up and stop in the maintenance position (vertical).
Lift both wiper arms away from the windshield.
Removal: Most models now use a push-button connector (a small black square on the blade) rather than a traditional hook.
Slide the new blade onto the arm until it clicks into place.
Lower both wiper arms carefully back to the windshield.
Exit Maintenance Mode
Turn the ignition ON again and briefly move the wiper switch to MIST.
The wipers will return to their normal parked position.
Do not attempt to lift the wipers without entering Maintenance Mode—this can damage the linkage.
Always handle the arms gently to avoid scratching the glass.
