🛠️ Tools and Materials Checklist

Get your tools and supplies together first. Having everything nearby prevents delays and tool searches mid-job.
  • Fresh Motor Oil: Check your oil filler cap or owner’s manual for the correct viscosity (like 0W-20 or 5W-30). Most modern engines require full synthetic oil, see Pros & Cons below.
  • New Oil Filter: Match the part number to your vehicle's make, model, and engine size.
  • Car Lift Equipment: Use a quality Floor Jack.  
  • Sturdy Jack Standsor a solid drive-up ramps. Personally I like using a floor jack, but either option is fine as long as you follow the safety rules. 
  • Wheel Chocks: Heavy blocks placed in front of and behind the tires to stop the car from rolling.
  • Wrenches and Sockets: A socket set and ratchet (or the specific wrench size required by your drain plug).
  • Creeper: Optional.
  • Torque Wrench: Recommended.
  • Oil Filter Wrench: A specialized tool to grip and unscrew stubborn, slippery filters.
  • Oil Drain Pan: A wide, shallow container to catch the old, dirty oil.
  • Funnel: A clean plastic funnel to prevent messy spills on top of your engine.
  • Disposable Dust Mask: For Lung protection.

⚠️ Critical Safety Rules

Working under a heavy vehicle can be dangerous, so always follow these safety steps: 
  1. Don't rely on a jack alone. Always lower the car on to jack stands or use vehicle-rated drive on ramps, as floor jacks can fail without warning.
  2. Ensure wheels are secure. Set the brake and place chocks against the rear tires.
  3. Do a shake test: gently shake the bumper. If the car moves, stop and adjust.
  4. Protect Yourself: Wear gloves to protect your skin. Use safety glasses to keep oil out of your eyes. I wear gloves and safety glasses on almost every automotive job. It's a smart habit to develop.
  5. Let the engine cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes before draining, since hot parts and oil can burn you. This step is really important. I learned the hard way when I once changed the oil on a Bronco II while the engine was still hot. As soon as I took out the drain plug, the oil shot straight into a frame rail and then all over me. I never made that mistake again. So always be careful if the engine is hot, or better still wait until the engine cools.
  6. Make sure the area is clear. Keep pets and young children away from your workspace while you work on your car.

🔧 Step-by-Step Oil Change Process

Step 1: Prep and Lift the Vehicle

Start by parking on a flat, level surface. Set the parking brake and chock the rear tires, front and rear. Use a floor jack to lift the vehicle at the factory jack point. Avoid putting jack stands under the pinch weld unless they have a padded saddle.
 I’ve seen people do this, and it can cause damage right away. It’s better to place the stand under the frame rails or another padded area. Slowly lower the vehicle onto the stand until it is fully supported. Give the vehicle a gentle shake from side to side and front to back to make sure it’s stable. Leave the floor jack under the vehicle for added support and safety,

You can also use drive-on ramps to raise your vehicle. You don't need fancy ones like in the image above. Just make sure they are sturdy and you don't exceed their max weight capacity.

Step 2: Drain the Old Oil

Put on your safety gear and get under the vehicle using a creeper, tarp or old blanket. Find the oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine oil pan. Set the drain pan right under the plug.
Choose the right size socket or wrench and turn the drain plug to the left to loosen it. (when working with most car fasteners and plugs remember this, "righty tighty, lefty loosey".
Unscrew the drain plug by hand while pressing inward to help prevent spills. When it’s loose, take it out quickly. Let the oil drain until it slows to a drip.
Wipe off the drain plug threads. If your vehicle has a crush washer under the drain plug, put in a new one. Screw the plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Then use a wrench to tighten it to about 20 ft-lbs. Make sure the plug is snug, but don’t overtighten, or you might strip the threads. Never us power tools. It's sounds ridiculous, but I've seen mechanics do it.

Step 3: Replace the Oil Filter 

Locate the oil filter—a metal cylinder or plastic housing—attached to the engine block.

🧠 How to Know You Found the Right Part

  • Always mounted to the engine block or an oil filter bracket.
  • Usually, it is placed low on the engine, but some cars position it on top.
  • It will be near the oil pan or oil passages.
  • Identify the only part that looks like a can or a large plastic cap and can be unscrewed.
Put the drain pan under the filter to catch oil. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter by turning it counterclockwise. Then, remove it by hand.
Important: Ensure the old filter’s black rubber O-ring gasket detaches with it. If the gasket remains on the engine block, a double gasket can cause oil to leak under high pressure and cause an expensive repair bill.
Open the new oil filter. If it mounts vertically, pre-fill it with a little fresh oil. Pour oil into the center hole. This helps the engine reach oil pressure right away at startup.
Apply a thin layer of clean oil to the black rubber gasket of the new filter. This helps the gasket seal properly and prevents sticking during installation and removal. Turn the new filter clockwise until the gasket contacts the engine, then hand-tighten it an additional 3/4 turn.
 Do not use tools; hand-tightening is enough. If you use a wrench to tighten the oil filter, the next time you want to change it, it will be very difficult to remove.

Step 4: Add Fresh Oil

Move out from under the car and open the hood. Find the oil filler cap on the engine. Wipe the area so dirt does not get inside, then remove the cap.
Put a clean funnel into the opening. Pour in the amount of fresh oil your manual suggests, usually between 4 and 6 quarts.
Take out the funnel and tighten the oil cap. Wipe away any drips. Start the engine and let it idle for 10 to 15 seconds. Look at your dashboard; the oil pressure warning light should go off. If it stays on, turn off the engine. Use a flashlight to look for leaks under the car. Check your manual and reset the oil life monitor.

Step 5: Check the Dipstick

Let the vehicle sit quietly for 5 minutes so the fresh oil settles back down into the pan. Pull out the engine dipstick and wipe it clean with a fresh rag or paper towel. Reinsert the dipstick fully into its tube, then pull it back out.
Hold the dipstick flat and look at the tip. The oil coating should sit right near the HIGH or FULL mark (often represented by a top dot or a crosshatched pattern).

Synthetic oil is recommended for many vehicles because it performs better than regular oil in extreme heat, cold, and tough engine conditions.

Never pour used motor oil down a drain, onto the ground, or into the trash. It is very harmful to the environment.
Clean up any spills right away with kitty litter or absorbent pads. Carefully pour the old oil from your drain pan into a sealed plastic container, such as the jug your new oil came in, using your funnel.
Bring your sealed container of old oil and your used oil filter to a local auto parts store or recycling center. Most of these stores, and many repair shops, will take your used oil and recycle it for free.
