Step 2: Drain the Old Oil

  • Usually, it is placed low on the engine, but some cars position it on top.
  • It will be near the oil pan or oil passages.
  • Identify the only part that looks like a can or a large plastic cap and can be unscrewed.
Put the drain pan under the filter to catch oil. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter by turning it counterclockwise. Then, remove it by hand.
Important: Ensure the old filter’s black rubber O-ring gasket detaches with it. If the gasket remains on the engine block, a double gasket can develop, causing oil to leak under high pressure once you install the new filter.
Open the new oil filter. If it mounts vertically, pre-fill it with a little fresh oil. Pour oil into the center hole. This helps the engine reach oil pressure right away at startup.
Apply a thin layer of clean oil to the black rubber gasket of the new filter with a gloved finger. This helps the gasket seal properly and prevents sticking during removal. Turn the new filter clockwise until the gasket contacts the engine, then hand-tighten it an additional 3/4 turn.
 Do not use tools; hand-tightening is enough. If you use a wrench to tighten the oil filter, the next time you want to change it, it will be very difficult to remove.

Step 4: Add Fresh Oil

Place your clean funnel into the hole. Pour in the exact amount of fresh oil recommended by your manual (usually between 4 and 6 quarts).
Remove the funnel, put the oil cap back on tightly, and wipe up any drips. Start the engine and let it idle for 10 to 15 seconds. Check your dashboard to make sure the oil pressure warning light turns off. According to Engineer Fix, if the light stays on, you might just need to reset the electronic oil life monitor. Use a flashlight to look under the car and make sure nothing is leaking from the drain plug or filter. Then turn off the engine.
